Several weeks ago I visited one of the many breathtaking falls that surround us in the Finger Lakes region. What a gem this glen is. It's only about a 2 minute walk, but what an experience with a refreshing cool breeze and the deafening roar of the fall. I look forward to spring and summer as my studio becomes the great outdoors once again.

This rose, the largest I've ever seen, was given to me by my husband last Valentine's Day. Carefully hung upside down to dry, it offered a most interesting subject matter for a painting, and I couldn't resist.

The variation of color is overwhelming even when one paints two seemingly simple white objects. Reflected light from the table give warm hues, cast shadows give off a cool shade, and the sunlight hitting certain plains causes a near blinding glow softening the edges. Here, is a rather quick study of this deceivingly complex still life.

With three sheer delicate petals bending outward and three raised up covering its innermost parts, the iris seems to be a modest beauty. One of my dear friends brought a bouquet of irises from her garden to encourage me during a difficult time. This was the last of all the lovely irises that bloomed.

In His Time

The rose is given to loved ones in honor of special occasions and to communicate feelings otherwise inadequately expressed by words. The essence is fresh and like no other scent, although we try to duplicate it. The perfectly timed opening of a rose eludes our comprehension. We wait and watch, howbeit impatiently, for the green curtains to open and reveal the gentle soloist. The rose opens not a moment too soon and not a moment past ready. Truly the works of His hands are wonderful, and He makes all things beautiful in His time.

This rose, growing in our small garden, opened over a period of 2 weeks, and I thoroughly enjoyed capturing each moment. "In His Time" is a series of four paintings created as a single rose opens over time. They are four separately framed 8x10 paintings.

The pathways in Haddon Heights Park have been a joy to meander though each season of the year. I've picnicked here, walked here, spent memorable times with dear friends here, camped out for the day to sketch and paint, and waded in knee deep snow in the early morning hours to take photographs. Each bend in the path is familiar and whispers memories of past moments. Here I can get a closer look at what God has fashioned and shut out the noise of the world around me.

The Pear pieces consist of thin oil washes and are the first paintings completed in this textured style. The transparency of the paint allows one to see the canvas underneath resulting in the appearance of age. This has inspired me to name them in Latin, a language that has survived the passage of time.

My Grandmother always had a grouping of small brightly colored pitchers on her window sill. As a child I enjoyed the rich glow they gave in the sun’s light during the day. This tiny cobalt pitcher was my favorite out of all the pitchers in her collection.

One of the difficulties in setting up a still life composed of highly reflective objects is to somehow not appear I the reflection yourself, yet have the best angle of lighting and point of view. This painting is dedicated to my husband’s grandparents, born in England, who after coming to the States returned to serve for many years as missionaries there. I thank God for their example and for allowing me the honor of being in their family.

Spring had just arrived as the once bare branches began to be covered in new growth. This is the red maple that stands in front of the first home that my husband and I have lived in. It symbolizes two wonderful years of marriage and many hopes and prayers for the future.

This painting of some of my Mother’s flowers was completed in my parent’s home in Florida. It is also one of three remaining paintings bearing my maiden name. Some paintings are a struggle all the way through, however others will come together effortlessly. This was one of those paintings that seemed to paint itself from beginning to end and was consequently one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had painting.
